Dir. Amalia Ulman. Spain, 2021, 82 mins. DCP. In Spanish and English with English subtitles. Amidst the devastation of post-crisis Spain, mother and daughter bluff and grift to keep up the lifestyle they think they deserve, bonding over common tragedy and an impending eviction. The first feature from multimedia artist Amalia Ulman, El Planeta stars the director and her mother, Ale Ulman, and captures our uneasy contemporary global reality with a wry, absurdist point of view. El Planeta is a sardonic, thoroughly entertaining depiction of two women who refuse to accept their increasing economic marginalization. Opening night film of the 2021 New Directors/New Films festival. A Utopia release. View trailer.

"A captivating throwback to the shaggy aesthetic of micro-budget '90s New York indies that plays like Grey Gardens with a hint of early Almodóvar."—David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
