George Miller’s dystopian action thriller and the acclaimed Brazilian sci-fi/western hybrid in a showcase of epic, brutal battles.

The Road Warrior (Mad Max 2)
Dir. George Miller. Australia, 1981, 94 mins. With Mel Gibson, Bruce Spence, Michael Preston. The rare sequel to equal—if not surpass—its predecessor, The Road Warrior pushes the original’s delirious action spectacle into overdrive. Miller’s film follows Mad Max, now a loner adrift in an anarchic, postapocalyptic wasteland, as he joins up with a band of refugees who must fight to protect their precious gasoline from hordes of marauding bikers. It all builds to a breathtaking climax—a white-knuckle, tour-de-force extended chase sequence involving an 18-wheel oil tanker—that achieves the exhilarating rush of pure cinema.

Bacurau
Dirs. Kleber Mendonça Filho, Juliano Dornelles. Brazil / France, 2019, 131 mins. In English and Portuguese with English subtitles. With Sonia Braga, Udo Kier, Bárbara Colen, Thomas Aquino. A few years from now... Bacurau, a small remote village in Brazil, mourns the loss of its matriarch, Carmelita, who lived to be 94. Days later, its inhabitants notice that their village has literally vanished from online maps and a UFO-shaped drone is seen flying overhead. There are forces that want to expel them from their homes, and soon, in a genre-bending twist, a band of armed mercenaries led by Udo Kier arrive in town to pick off the inhabitants one by one. A fierce confrontation takes place when the townspeople turn the tables on the villainous outsiders, banding together by any means necessary to protect and maintain their community.
