Dir. Victor Fleming. US, 1939, 101 mins. With Judy Garland, Bert Lahr, Ray Bolger, Frank Morgan, Jack Haley, Margaret Hamilton. A tornado sends Dorothy over the rainbow, out of her black-and-white world and into an extravagant Technicolor fantasy where she must help a Scarecrow, a Tin Man, and a Cowardly Lion accept themselves while also coming to terms with her own ideas about home. A quintessential road movie, musical, coming-of-age story, and so much more, The Wizard of Oz is a cinematic masterpiece that’s also an eternal childhood rite of passage.

Preceded by two beloved Chuck Jones classics, the screwball Buck Rogers parody Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2th Century (1953, 7 mins) and the sublime parable One Froggy Evening (1955, 7 mins).
