Part of Northwest Passages: The Films of Kelly Reichardt
Sunday, March 1, 2020, 2:00 p.m.
Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater

Dir. Kelly Reichardt. 2016, 107 mins. DCP. With Laura Dern, Kristen Stewart, Michelle Williams, Lily Gladstone. Three women strive to forge their own paths in Kelly Reichardt’s observational, exquisitely attuned tryptic. A lawyer (Dern) finds herself contending with both office sexism and a hostage situation; a wife and mother (Williams) whose determination to build her dream home puts her at odds with the men in her life; and a young law student (Stewart) forms an ambiguous bond with a lonely ranch hand (Gladstone). “Reichardt lets her flawed, enigmatic heroines be, allowing them to keep struggling, persevering and relishing what can sometimes pass for tiny victories. You know a filmmaker is in supreme command of her medium when what she creates feels less like a movie than a candid glimpse of ongoing lives that will continue to play out long after the lights have come on.” Anne Hornaday, The Washington Post.
