The exhibition Envisioning 2001: Stanley Kubrick’s Space Odyssey presents an in-depth exploration of the story, design, and visual effects of the landmark film that, more than 50 years after its release, continues to influence, confound, and inspire. This event includes after-hours access to the exhibition, followed by a discussion between Douglas Trumbull, who was special photographic effects supervisor for the film, and space historian Piers Bizony, author of 2001: Filming the Future, and a 70mm screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey in the Redstone Theater.

2001: A Space Odyssey. Dir. Stanley Kubrick. 1968, 149 mins. (plus intermission). 70mm. With Keir Dullea. As brilliantly engineered as the space program itself, Stanley Kubrick’s mysterious and profound epic—“the ultimate trip”—is about nothing less than the beauty and the banality of civilization, blending cool satire, an elaborate vision of the future, and passages of avant-garde cinematic inventiveness.

This event is sold out. Some tickets may become available on standby at the door. Tickets: $40 ($37.50 Museum members). Tickets include access to the exhibition from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. (Members may contact [email protected] with questions regarding online reservations.)
