Celebrating Juneteenth: Open Call

May 10–June 12, 2021

Extended through June 12.

Inspired by Juneteenth, the holiday celebrating the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States—the June 19th date originating from a Texas proclamation in 1865—MoMI Education invites young filmmakers ages 12–18 to highlight significant moments in Black history relating to Queens, New York. Students can submit short videos (1–5 minutes) exploring historic places, such as Kaufman Astoria Studios, where the films The Wiz and The Emperor Jones were shot, or those relating to people, such as filmmaker Julie Dash, rapper Nas, actor Luna Lauren Vélez, activist Malcolm X (who lived in Elmhurst), inventor Lewis Howard Latimer, or musician Louis Armstrong.

Selected short films will screen on Saturday, June 19, at 1:00 p.m. in the Redstone Theater at the Museum, preceding a screening of Miss Juneteenth, Channing Godfrey Peoples’s heartwarming film about a former beauty queen who enters her daughter into the local Miss Juneteenth pageant.

To apply for this open call, fill out this application form. Applications are open until June 12, 2021; filmmakers will be notified by June 15.
