Known for his pinpoint-precise studies of young love and his involvement in the French New Wave scene, Philippe Garrel crafts an emotionally resonant moral tale with his latest film, The Salt of Tears (Le Sel des larmes). The story focuses on Luc (Logann Antuofermo), who follows in his aging father’s footsteps to study the craft of furniture joining. Luc doesn’t appear to have any trouble meeting and dating women, and he’s quick to aggressively court Djemila (Oulaya Amamra) at a Paris bus stop. Skeptical yet ultimately trusting, Djemila will not be Luc’s one and only. Constructed and composed with crystalline austerity, with co-writers Jean-Claude Carrière and Arlette Langmann and cinematographer Renato Berta, The Salt of Tears demonstrates the persistent vitality of one of cinema’s great observers of the callowness of youth.
